Job Advertisement: Researcher in Pyrotechnics and Explosive Materials
The Total Defence Research Institute (FOI) is a government agency conducting world-leading research in defense and security to support Sweden's military and civil defense. The research spans several areas, including underwater, cyber defense, space, electronic warfare, sensor systems, civil defense, CBRNe (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive materials), military platforms including weapons and protection, as well as security policy analysis. FOI's research plays a key role in building Sweden's defense capability.
Are you curious about exploring advanced pyrotechnics and explosive materials for real? Do you want to be involved in developing and testing innovative experimental setups from idea to finished solution? Then FOI could be your new workplace! We offer a balanced work life, a developing work environment, and a socially important job!
About the Position
Your tasks will include conducting experimental activities with pyrotechnic charges, both in laboratory environments and at special testing facilities. The work is project-based for both national and international clients. The work encompasses the entire process from theoretical preparation to the construction and setup of complete experimental setups. This also involves formulating and developing various types of pyrotechnic and explosive charges, as well as performing sensitivity tests to assess their properties and safety levels. Various analytical instruments will be used for determination and characterization. An important part of the role is also to carefully document and evaluate results from all conducted experiments. You will present the research through reports, articles, and presentations, both internally and to clients or at conferences.
About the Unit
You will belong to the Explosives Applications unit, which is part of the Weapons, Protection, and Security department, located in Grindsjön, south of Stockholm. The unit conducts research on synthesis, process development, formulation, and analysis of explosive materials and pyrotechnics, both from a civil and military perspective. The department as a whole conducts research, development, and testing activities, primarily to support the Armed Forces' capability for armed combat. The department is organized into three areas of activity - Energetic Systems and Electromagnetic Weapons, Weapon Effects, and Effects and Vulnerability. Protection and effect are central to the Armed Forces' operations, and the expertise is also relevant to support the civil society's need for protection. The research ranges from physical and chemical phenomena to solutions in the form of complex technical systems. The close access to shooting ranges and explosive material classified laboratories is a prerequisite for the entire operation where theory and experiments interact.
The picturesque Grindsjön is located on Södertörn, about 40 km south of Stockholm. There are SL bus connections with Tumba, Västerhaninge, and Ösmo/Nynäshamn. You will be part of unit xx belonging to the Weapons, Protection, and Security department.
